Who should take IELTS?

IELTS is available in 2 test versions: General Training and Academic

• General Training: for students applying for secondary education or for people applying for training programs or work experience in English speaking environment.
• Academic: for students applying for higher education (universities, colleges, etc.) or professional registration in English speaking countries. Most undergraduate courses in the US and England require a minimum band score 6.0 of IELTS for students whose first language is not English. In addition, over the top 20 universities in The US, 15 of them accept students with IELTS achievement that is higher than 6.5 (no less than 6.0 in any elements)

How is the test conducted?

The total test time is less than 3 hours. Test takers will take the Listening, Reading and Writing in that order without any break. Speaking test can be taken on the same day or on the next following day.

• Listening (30 minutes, plus 10 minutes extra to transfer answers to the answer sheet)

Candidates will listen to 4 recorded monologues and conversations.

• Reading (60 minutes) Candidates will read 3 long reading passages with tasks.

Texts range from descriptive and factual to the discursive and analytical.

Texts are authentic (e.g. taken from books, journals and newspapers)

• Writing (60 minutes)

Writing task 1 of at least 150 words where the candidate must summarise, describe or explain a table, graph, chart or diagram.

Short essay task 2 of at least 250 words on a common topic.

• Speaking (11-14 minutes)

How is IELTS scored?

The test is designed to assess English language skill at all levels. Thus, test-takers cannot fail the test. English language ability of test-takers will be scored based on a 9.0 band scale system. Test-takers will be given a score from band 1.0 to 9.0 for each part of the test. The average score produced by all 4 parts of the test will be the final overall band score.
